New Young Brown Dwarfs in the Orion Molecular Cloud 2/3 Region
نویسندگان
چکیده
Forty new low mass members with spectral types ranging from M4−M9 have been confirmed in the Orion Molecular Cloud 2/3 region. Through deep, I−, z−, J−, H− and K−band photometry of a 20 × 20 field in OMC 2/3, we selected brown dwarf candidates for follow-up spectroscopy. Low resolution farred and near-infrared spectra were obtained for the candidates, and 19 young brown dwarfs in the OMC 2/3 region are confirmed. They exhibit spectral types of M6.5−M9, corresponding to approximate masses of 0.075−0.015 M⊙ using the evolutionary models of Baraffe et al. (1998). At least one of these bona fide young brown dwarfs has strong Hα emission, indicating that it is actively accreting. In addition, we confirm 21 new low mass members with spectral types of M4−M6, corresponding to approximate masses of 0.35−0.10 M⊙ in OMC 2/3. By comparing pre-main sequence tracks to the positions of the members in the H-R diagram, we find that most of the brown dwarfs are less than 1 Myr, but find a number of low mass stars with inferred ages greater than 3 Myr. The discrepancy in the stellar and substellar ages is due to our selection of only low luminosity sources; however, the presence of such objects implies the presence of an age spread in the OMC 2/3 region. We discuss possible reasons for this apparent age spread. X-ray emission from the young brown dwarfs of the Taurus Molecular Cloud
Aims. We report the X-ray properties of young (∼3 Myr) bona fide brown dwarfs of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC). Methods. The XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the TMC (XEST) is a large program designed to systematically investigate the X-ray properties of young stellar/substellar objects in the TMC. In particular, the area surveyed by 15 XMM-Newton pointings (of which three are archival observat...
متن کاملUVES spectra of young brown dwarfs in Cha I: radial and rotational velocities
Based on high-resolution UVES spectra we found that the radial velocity (RV) dispersion of nine of twelve known young bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Cha I dark cloud is 2.0 kms, i.e. significantly smaller than the RV dispersion of T Tauri stars in Cha I (3.6 km/s) and only slightly larger than the dispersion of the surrounding molecular gas (1.2 km/s) (Mizuno et al. 1999). This res...
متن کاملA U-band survey of brown dwarfs in the Taurus Molecular Cloud with the XMM-Newton Optical/UV Monitor
Aims. We aim to characterize the U-band variability of young brown dwarfs in the Taurus Molecular Cloud and discuss its origin. Methods. We used the XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud, where a sample of 11 young bona fide brown dwarfs (spectral type later than M6) were observed simultaneously in X-rays with XMM-Newton and in the U-band with the XMM-Newton Optical/UV Monito...
متن کاملYoung stars and brown dwarfs surrounding
Aims. We look for new regions for the search of substellar objects. Methods. Two circular areas, 45 arcmin-radius each, centred on the young massive star systems Alnilam and Mintaka in the Orion Belt, have been explored. The regions are very young (less than 10 Ma), have low extinction, and are neighbours to σ Orionis (∼3 Ma), a young open cluster very rich in brown dwarfs and planetary-mass ob...
متن کاملThe origin of the initial mass function and its dependence on the mean Jeans mass in molecular clouds
We investigate the dependence of stellar properties on the mean thermal Jeans mass in molecular clouds. We compare the results from the two largest hydrodynamical simulations of star formation to resolve the fragmentation process down to the opacity limit, the first of which was reported by Bate, Bonnell & Bromm. The initial conditions of the two calculations are identical except for the radii ...
